Nursing homes and assisted living facilities have a clear obligation: to care for some of the most precious and vulnerable members of our society - the elderly and infirm. But we cannot simply take fulfillment of that obligation for granted. Vigilance is needed to protect the safety and wellbeing of our loved ones and guard against nursing home injuries caused by neglect or abuse.
The Tennessee Adult Protective Services (APS) investigated a Tennessee nursing home in August, after receiving a report of the abuse of a 100-year-old resident. The resident was admitted to the hospital for the treatment of several injuries, including severe hemorrhaging, broken ribs, bruises and pressure sores.
APS, a division of the Tennessee Department of Human Services, investigates alleged claims of neglect, abuse and financial exploitation of adults who are vulnerable because of a mental or physical limitation.
According to figures from the APS, only 1 in 23 cases of abuse, neglect or exploitation is reported. The APS is therefore enlisting the help of the public in the reporting of suspected cases of abuse. The APS has published "signs of abuse, neglect or exploitation" to help Tennesseans recognize possible abuse. APS can then become involved to protect the victim.
Signs of abuse or neglect to look for include:
Abuse
- Unexplained injuries
- Burns
- Bruises
- Withdrawn, passive behavior
- Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
- Not wanting to be left alone with caregiver
- Difficulty sitting or walking
Neglect
- Malnutrition
- Dehydration
- Poor hygiene
- Unsafe living conditions
- Hoarding
Exploitation
- Asking for money
- Inability to account for money
- Unpaid bills
It is important that we are proactive and vigilant about the safety of our loved ones. If you suspect abuse, neglect or exploitation at the hands of a caregiver, nursing home or assisted living facility, report your observations to APS or other authorities. Also, contact an experienced nursing home abuse attorney to discuss your legal options.
