The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance has issued advice for consumers in hopes of helping them weather any mishaps that occur.
Whether you are traveling or close to home, you will want to be sure that your insurance coverage is adequate and know how it can help you - in the case of a personal injury, for example. By knowing ahead of time what your insurance covers, you will not have to scramble when and if an emergency occurs.
Protection Your Insurance May Provide
Your insurance policies may cover more than you think they do. The Department of Commerce and Insurance offers the following insights:
- Injured guest: If your guest slips and falls on your property and sustains an injury, it is likely that your homeowners insurance will cover part of the medical bills.
- Burning house: If your house catches fire and your belongings are destroyed, homeowners insurance will probably pay for them. Be mindful, however, that you will probably have to pay a deductible; also, some items may require additional coverage.
- Borrowed car: If you lend your car to a relative who then gets into an auto accident, in most cases the insurance coverage on the car will still be valid.
- Medical emergency: If you are traveling and you need urgent medical care, your health insurance may cover emergency room and urgent-care visits, even out of state.
- Stolen card: If a thief takes your credit card and runs up large bills, your homeowners insurance may help. Some policies offer funds to pay debts. In addition, notifying the credit card company according to the terms of the credit agreement will limit your liability.
While your insurance coverage may extend farther than you realized, it is important to check the details of your policy. Not every policy is the same.
If you are injured in an accident or find yourself facing significant property loss, the last thing you want to worry about is insurance. Find out what your coverage is and whether you are comfortable with it.
