School Bus Crash Injures At Least 23 Students
Posted By Kinnard, Clayton & Beveridge || Nov 18, 2016
At least 23 students were injured after a school bus rolled over on Interstate 65 North at about 10:45 a.m. on Friday, just north of Nashville, TN.
The Nashville Fire Department reported that 46 people were on the Chester County High School bus – 43 students, two chaperones, and the driver. 23 children were taken to local hospitals including TriStar Centennial Medical Center, TriStar Skyline Medical Center, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center via ambulance, while the other 20 were taken by bus as a precaution.
According to officials, the crash occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle. Don Aaron with Metro police said that:
"She initially told our officers that as she got off the ramp, she felt some steering issues. She also felt the wind blowing. It’s clear to us by the tracks that you see she lost control.”
The Nashville Police Department is currently investigating other factors that may have played a role in the crash. They believe that speed may have played a role. Aaron commented that:
“The Nashville police department’s crash investigation team is investigating why this bus flipped. It’s my understanding that this bus is relatively new and has been in service for about a year.”
The I-65 off-ramp was closed for several hours as emergency crews worked to recover the injured victims and clear the area.
