Helping the Injured in Tennessee Since 1977

Even with better design, rollover accidents still happen

Cars and trucks have come a long way over the past 100 years or so. On top of now being able to handle top speeds and a variety of weather conditions, cars, trucks and SUVs now also come with a number of different safety options, including seat belts, air bags and anti-lock brakes. However, as mentioned in our last post focused on new safety technologies, more can still be done to make vehicles even safer.

When talking about the progression of safety features over the years, a recent accident involving a 1915 Ford Model T highlighted the changes that have been made in the past 98 years.

The accident happened on a Friday morning. It was the last day of the international Model T club's annual tour. This tour is a yearly event that takes place at different locations throughout the country.

In this case, the 1915 Model T was pulled over to the side of the road. The idea was to let traffic pass. However, the front right wheel of the car ended up coming up off the ground. This caused the wooden spokes to separate and the car flipped.

All four people in the Model T were ejected. Three were injured and one was killed.

In looking at the design of the Model T, one member of the club said there is no rollover protection.

With newer, more modern cars, the vehicles are a lot harder to flip. However, this is not to say that rollover accidents do not still happen. In fact, SUVs -- which are very popular -- are especially prone to rollover accidents.

In the end, the message is that while one can argue cars are built safer today than in the early 1900s, there are still accidents caused by negligent design and defective products.
